On May 25, 1961, then US President John F Kennedy, shocked the world with the following words...

"I belive this nation should commit itself to acheiving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to Earth. No single space project in this period will be so difficult or expensive to accomplish."

With those words, President Kennedy, set in motion what would become the largest engineering project since the building of the pyramids on the Gisa Plateau in Egypt. It would cost the lives of three couragous men, Gus Grissom, Ed White, and Roger Chaffee and consume over 20 Billion US dollars. Was it all worth it? I believe so.
